The are many differences between old fashioned telephones and modern ones. The first phones didn't do much more than dialing a switchboard operator, they would connect you to your call. Since then, we have gone wireless, and can pretty much do anything with our phones.

In the old days, if you wanted to get some kind of information, you had to get up and get it. Telephones allow you to just call the other party holding that information and it is transferred to you via cable. In this way it also reduces cost of operation, since you no longer need to spend time traveling the space in search for what you're looking for.
People today can use old telephones ( 2012 ) but they are most likely rare.
