The easiest way to become a cop and receive paid training is joining the military

Answer

The first thing one must do is fill out an application. Then undergo an oral interview, take a drug test and a physical exam. There are a number of minimum standards that must be met to even be considered. Most police departments require their candidates be at least 21 years of age to apply.

There must be no history of felonies or drug use. The individual must be of a high moral standard, which is determined by a polygraph test along with an extensive background check. The recruit must pass a physical fitness test, similar in length and difficulty to one given to military recruits. Exact requirements vary from state to state, and agency to agency. There is a written exam which also must be completed and passed.

Once hired, the recruit must attend a police academy for approximately six months, involving both physical training and classroom training. High performance standards are required during this time. All tests must be passed satisfactorily. Following the academy, a new recruit is assigned to a Field Training Officer for several weeks prior to being left alone to a specific duty as a rookie cop.

It takes a nice, big, clean resume; however, most police agencies are willing to overlook minor offenses. It takes physical ability, psychological stability, courage and dedication. It takes flexibility, assisting a stranded motorist one minute and facing an armed felon the next. It takes the ability to work as part of a team; every police agency is a paramilitary organization.

Like most jobs today, it takes education and training. You have to know thousands of legal details, and know how to use today's sophisticated equipment.

There was a time when some government official could hand you a badge and you would instantly be a police officer. There may be a few places where that might still happen, but in general you can expect to have to obtain educational and training credentials before getting a police job; unless you can get yourself elected Sheriff by a gullible populace.

Some police agencies have their own training academies, especially State Police or State Patrol and major cities. You need to be able to pass educational and physical tests in order to gain entry into one of these programs. Sometimes smaller police units such as sheriff departments will band together to sponsor training programs that none of them could afford individually.

Some police agencies require a college degree. Some police agencies require prior experience; they don't want you unless you have already worked elsewhere.

Some states have established standards including such things as required coursework and on-the-job training.

Are cop training courses hard for someone who's not in shape?

Becoming a cop is hard work Becoming a cop is not for the faint-hearted. Becoming a cop is hard work. It is physically demanding. Someone who is out of shape or overweight will need to train hard for several months in order to be successful in the fitness challenge. For others, the most challenging part of becoming a cop will be the classroom work that must be mastered, and for others it will be the special circumstances that are required of the policeman.
