For oft, when on my couch I lie

In vacant or in pensive mood,

They flash upon that inward eye

Which is the bliss of solitude;

And then my heart with pleasure fills,

And dances with the daffodils.

The "inward eye" is the visualization of a memory.

The stanza is commenting that when he is alone, and not feeling much

of anything, he remembers the daffodils and they make him feel happy.

The "inward eye" in the poem "I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud" by William Wordsworth refers to the poet's imagination or memory. It suggests the ability to recall and experience the beauty of nature internally, even when physically distant from it. It underscores the idea that one can find solace and joy by reflecting on past experiences.

William Wordsworth's poem "Daffodils" was published in 1807 and revised in 1815.

It is a reflection of a time when he saw the April daffodils in the Lake District of England.

And that's just what "inward eye" means in the poem. You know how when you remember something you an "see" it? It's not there in front of you, but your memory can bring it back in full color. That is the "inward eye".
