Dear Great Pumpkin, I am looking forward to your arrival on Halloween Night. I hope you will bring me lots of presents.
You must get discouraged because more people believe in Santa Claus than in you. Well, let's face it; Santa Claus has had more publicity, but being #2, perhaps you try harder.
Everyone tells me you are a fake, but I believe in you. P.S.: If you really are a fake, don't tell me. I don't wanna know.
That's what he writes in his letter at the end.
At the end of "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown," Linus says, "There are three things I have learned never to discuss with people: religion, politics, and the Great Pumpkin." He then walks off with Charlie Brown as they discuss getting candy.
It is Linus that believes in the Great Pumpkin. Charlie Brown thinks Linus is crazy. The great Pumpkin is a figment of Linus' imagination and never shows in any of the Cartoons. Besides...the Great Pumpkin doesn't grant wishes he brings presents.

The Great Pumpkin
The actor was Christopher Shea (1958-2010).
Actually, it's Linus Van Pelt who is waiting for The Great Pumpkin, and the problem is that the pumpkin patch may not be sincere enough.
Charlie Brown is originally outside Linus and Lucy's house, and Lucy is inside. When you complete the pumpkin patch sequence, Charlie brown is with Snoopy in his backyard (left). When you finish collecting the leaves, and Linus jumps in them, follow him to mail his letter. After he does (with a delay to recover his blanket), Lucy and Charlie Brown are playing with the football in the yard.
Although you see him at the start of the island, and in the discussion with Linus about the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown does not appear in his backyard until you have completed the Pumpkin selection, Pumpkin rolling, and Pigpen parts of the game. 1) In the Pumpkin Patch, weigh the pumpkins and give the heaviest to Lucy 2) Roll the Pumpkin safely to Linus and Lucy's house 3) Take the bag from Linus and give it to Pigpen outside 4) Give the lemon sucker to Linus and pick up his Pen from the desk Now Charlie Brown and Snoopy will appear at the leaf pile in the backyard.
After you give Linus his blanket, head back to Charlie Brown's backyard. Lucy will be there playing football with him.
In the Peanuts comic strip by Charles Schulz, the Great Pumpkin is a fictional character and holiday tradition that Linus believes in. According to Linus, the Great Pumpkin is similar to Santa Claus but comes on Halloween night and brings presents to sincere pumpkin patches. However, the Great Pumpkin never actually appears in the comic strip.
