In the movie, carbon dioxide was building up much faster than the crew had calculated, but they realized their miscalculation was because they were doing the math for 2 people instead of 3. The LM was designed for 2 people, so all the equations were based on that. However, during Apollo 13 all 3 men were in the LM, so the equations were wrong. When they realize their error, Jack Swiggert then sarcastically offers to hold his breath so that he doesn't contribute to the CO2 build up, and in doing so making their equations correct.
