There are several different styles of yarn swift. The most common is probably the umbrella swift. Wooden ribs are arranged around a central shaft that is mounted on a table edge and attached to a movable ring around the shaft. When the ring is moved up the shaft, it pushes the ribs away, just like an umbrella. The yarn hank is wrapped around the outside edge of the ribs as the center ring is raised and until the ribs firmly hold on to the ring of yarn. The end of the hank is found and as this end is pulled, the swift rotates. allowing the hank to be uncoiled without tangling. The hank of yarn is wound into a ball as it is uncoiled from the swift.
