A pane or panel is typically something that runs down the side of a window, typically the left side.
The "Navigation Pane" found in Windows Explorer displays a hierarchical tree view of the subfolders in the selected folder, if any, and the + and - buttons alongside the items in the tree can be clicked to show the contents of other folders.
Such a pane may be found in other applications, although I do not know of any that do so.
What we call a navigation pane is basically a small screen that gives you a fewchoices for where the computer program will allow you to go. Navigation Panes include click able buttons and a small amount of explanation of what choices you have and what to do about it
The Navigation Pane is the place or rather platform which allows the users to change and switch between the different areas like the Calendar, Contacts and Mail.
