Oyez, coming to us from Anglo-Norman descenence 'oyer' meaning 'to hear', is the word said thrice in succession by the Marshal of the Court when a court of law is opened. Meaning the same as 'Hear ye', it was a way to invoke silence and attention before a session.
Hear ye, hear ye
oyez, soyuz
Oyez
The Marshall of the Court announces the justices as they enter the courtroom by chanting, "The Honorable, the Chief Justice and the Associate Justices of the Supreme Court of the United States. Oyez! Oyez! Oyez! All persons having business before the Honorable, the Supreme Court of the United States, are admonished to draw near and give their attention, for the Court is now sitting. God save the United States and this Honorable Court!"
The ruling class used Norman French. Remnants of that language can be heard in American Courts when the bailiff calls out and says, "Oyez, oyez, oyez..." In this case the z is pronounced unlike modern french. Businessmen were bilingual. They traded with the common people in Low German and with the rulers in French. Businessmen also dealt with the people in the Netherlands using Low German.
They're actually saying "oyez, oyez." It comes from Anglo-Norman and loosely translated it means "hear ye, hear ye." The Supreme Court is the only court that uses this term, and it's probably because of tradition.
Opening the session:"The Honorable, the Chief Justice and the Associate Justices of the Supreme Court of the United States."As the Justices enter the courtroom:"Oyez, oyez, oyez: All persons having business before the Honorable, the Supreme Court of the United States, are admonished to draw near and give their attention, for the Court is now sitting. God save the United States and this honorable Court."
