The Sapiential (Wisdom) Books of The Bible (e.g. Psalms, Proverbs, Wisdom, Sirach, etc.) provide excellent guidance for life's daily struggles such as weight loss. As one example, we read
My sonne proove thy soule in thy life, and see what is evil for it, and give not that unto it. For all things are not profitable for all men, neither hath every soule pleasure in every thing. Be not unsatiable in any dainty thing: nor too greedy upon meates. For excess of meates bringeth sicknesse, and surfetting will turn into tholer. By surfetting have many perished, but hee that taketh heed, prolongeth his life.
Sirach 37:27-31 KJV (taken from an exact photographic replica of one of the existing original 1611 prints)
(N.B. Sirach is also called Ecclesiasticus, not to be confused with Ecclesiastes).
In more modern English, the same passage reads as follows:
My son, while you are well, govern your appetite so that you allow it not what is bad for you; for not every food is good for everyone, nor is everything suited to every taste. Be not drawn after every enjoyment, neither become a glutton for choice foods, for sickness comes with overeating, and gluttony brings on biliousness. Through lack of self-control many have died, but the abstemious man prolongs his life.
Sirach 37:26-30 NAB
Here the New American Bible has a nice commentary: Temperance and self-control should govern a man's appetite for food, which is intended not to destroy but to preserve life.
