Simply put, discovery is the revelation of evidence required by both prosecutors and defense attorney(s) in American courts. The 'show me yours and I'll show you mine' rule lets the opposing sides view in advance of trial all evidence, allowing time to prepare witnesses, research and questioning for upcoming court.

In the OJ Simpson case the prosecution cried foul when the videotaped interview with defense witness Rosa Lopez was not presented to the state's attornies during the required discovery process. Four days of court time was lost while the judge pondered the matter, trying to decide whether it was simple oversight or deliberate act.
