The Shang dynasty may have been the first Chinese dynasty to use the "rammed earth" construction (soil compressed between wooden boards) that formed the basis for much of the early Great Wall. The Shang (circa 1766 BC-1122 BC) far pre-dated the actual Great Wall, which originally included city and regional walls built during the Warring States period (circa 500 BC - 221 BC).
