It clearly states in the ten commandments not to lie. However if a person is a liar and you have a just reason - you should call his bluff - and then a trial would probably be held but that's a completely different story.

What the Bible does say:

John 8:44 - "You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it."

Ephesians 4:25 - Therefore, putting away lying, "Let each one of you speak truth with his neighbor," for we are members of one another.

Colossians 3:9 - Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old man with his deeds,

Revelation 21:8 - "But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death."

Revelation 22:14, 15 - Blessed are those who do His commandments, that they may have the right to the tree of life, and may enter through the gates into the city. But outside are dogs and sorcerers and sexually immoral and murderers and idolaters, and whoever loves and practices a lie.

The main trouble with the word "sin" is that few people know what it is these days. Everyone seems to have their own idea about it.

But The Bible defines it for man in I John 3:4: "...SIN IS the TRANSGRESSION OF THE LAW."

Paul elaborates as to which law this is referring in Romans 7:7: "...I had not known sin, but BY the law: for I had not known LUST, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet."

Clearly, then... the law that says 'Thou shalt not covet' is the Ten Commandments. And it's the breaking of these laws by men that IS SIN.

And, 'Thou shalt not bear false witness [LYING] against thy neighbour' [Ex.20:16] is one of the Ten Commandments -- the transgression of which IS A SIN.

ALSO

Here is a lie that was judged istantaneously:

Act 5:3 But Peter said, "Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and keep back part of the price of the land for yourself?

Act 5:4 While it remained, was it not your own? And after it was sold, was it not in your own control? Why have you conceived this thing in your heart? You have not lied to men but to God."

Act 5:5 Then Ananias, hearing these words, fell down and breathed his last. So great fear came upon all those who heard these things.

Here are some other verses from the New Testament:

Eph 4:25 Therefore, putting away lying, "LET EACH ONE OF YOU SPEAK TRUTH WITH HIS NEIGHBOR," for we are members of one another.

Col 3:8 But now you yourselves are to put off all these: anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy language out of your mouth.

Col 3:9 Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old man with his deeds,

Col 3:10 and have put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge according to the image of Him who created him,

The main one is the 9th Commandment: "Do not falsely testify against your neighbor." (Ex.20:16 NLT New Living Translation)

Among others that might accompany it is Jesus' testimony as to "who fathered or ORIGINATED the lie":

"...THERE IS NO TRUTH IN HIM [Satan the Devil]. When he lies, it is consistent with his character; for HE IS A LIARand the FATHER OF LIES.'" (John 8:44 NLT)

God's command to His Children to NOT lie, is one of the Ten Commandments. The Ten Laws of God that "defines what SIN is" : "...Sin is the transgression of the Law." (I John 3:4)

John also says: "If someone says, 'I belong to God,' but doesn't obey God's Commandments, that person is A LIAR and does not Live in the Truth." (I John 2:4 NLT)

[hint: man has been "seeking the truth" for generations... and has never been able to define or grasp it. It's been an ongoing "philosophical" debate throughout history, made most popular and chic by the Greek philosophers; the writings of whom the Romans adopted along with their rise to power... and which has become an integral part of modern higher education. Even Pontius Pilate tried to coerce Jesus into the debate during Jesus' trial:

"...Pilate replied, 'You are a king then?' 'You say that I AM a King, and you are right,' Jesus said. 'I was born for that purpose And I came TO BRING TRUTH TO THE WORLD. All who Love the TRUTH recognize that WHAT I SAY IS TRUE.' 'WHAT IS TRUTH?' Pilate asked..." (John 18:37-38 NLT).

Revealing the Truth is what a trial is all about... and lying is severely dealt with. Jesus testified that HIS WORDS ARE TRUTH... and not lies. And in His prayer to His Father in heaven in John 17... He reveals to His servants the SOURCE OF TRUTH. All of the Words Jesus utters; He got them from His Father to tell us:

" '...THY WORD IS TRUTH! '" (John 17:17)

"...the Father who sent Me, Himself gave Me a commandment WHAT TO SAY and in WHAT WORDS TO SPEAK. And I know that HIS COMMANDMENT is THE LIFE OF AGES [Eternal Life]. What therefore I speak, I SPEAK JUST AS THE FATHER HAS BIDDEN ME." (John 12:49-50 WEY Weymouth's New Testament)

The Bible reveals "lying" to be one of the TEN SINS that earns us the DEATH PENALTY... for breaking God's Ten Commandments. The breaking of which, the Bible tells us, sin is.

Jesus wasn't drawn into Pilate's philosophical debate at the time of His trial. He had bigger and better things on His mind and heart at the time, to waste His breath.

But, on the Day of Judgment at Pilate's trial... when he stands before that same "King" who told him, Truthfully, what He was -- Jesus may ask him: 'Do you REALLY want to know what TRUTH is, Pilate?'

If He does... Jesus will simply "open the books" of the Bible [by which God shall Measure and Judge the works and deeds of every man throughout the history of the WHOLE WORLD - see Rev.20:12]... and turn to John 17. And Pilate will learn [without debate] what Truth is:

"Sanctify them [set them apart from everyone else for God's Holy use] THROUGH THY TRUTH; THY WORD IS TRUTH." (John 17:17 KJV)

"Lying" is the OPPOSITE of Truth. And the Bible reveals that this world HATES THE TRUTH... and it HATES CHRIST... and has REJECTED it and HIM.

"I have given them Your Word [the Bible; the Truth]. And the world hates them because they do not belong to the world, just as I do not." (verse 14 NLT)

" 'When the world hates you, remember it hated Me before it hated you." (John 15:18 NLT)

The Truth is not "believed" in this world. It's lies, fables and myths that it believes; and which is the staple of this world. It's "sin" [the lies and deception of this world's god] upon which this world feeds... and is thereby "spiritually malnourished" [lying is wrong-teaching, spiritual junk-food] - resulting in generations of pain, suffering, misery and death.

"Why can't you understand what I AM saying? It is because you are unable to do so! For YOU ARE THE CHILDREN OF YOUR FATHER THE DEVIL, and YOU LOVE TO DO THE EVIL THINGS HE DOES. He was a Murderer [a sin... see the Ten Commandments] from the beginning and has always hated the TRUTH. There is no Truth in him. When he LIES, it is consistent with his character; for he is a LIAR and the FATHER OF LIES." (John 8:44 NLT)
