Well, how far can you throw a person? Not very far, I'd guess. How much does he trust you? Not very much.
This is true when the object lands at the same height as it was thrown, but not necessarity if the two are different. You can think of the motion in two parts; it moves upward and it moves sideways. If you throw it at a high angle, it won't have much of the sideways motion and won't travel far. If you throw it at a low angle, you won't have much upward motion and it will hit the ground before travelling too far. I believe the idiom you're looking for is "You can't trust a person further than you can throw them". The meaning is meant that you cannot trust someone because you can't throw them very far.
It means that you'd trust somebody very little, if at all. No average-size human could throw another one, or one who was bigger than they, beyond a very short distance, meaning that the amount you'd trust them would be equally short.
A place far away
It's not an idiom exactly. Romans used to throw Christians into an arena with lions as a form of execution. The phrase has come to mean any situation where someone is put into a situation where there's no way for them to succeed, or into a situation that's far over their head.
