The pulse rate can alert us to difficulties in our health, and it a person's pulse is too high or too low, it can indicate some sort of medical issue. The pulse is one of the vital signs that medical personel collect when a patient arrives for treatment or even just a simple examination. A physician or nurse practitioner will want to know a patient's "vitals" as a prerequisite for treatment of just about any kind. Resting Pulse Rate PR < 40 BMP - Below healthy resting heart rates. PR 40-60 BPM - Resting heart rate for sleeping. PR 60-100 BPM - Healthy adult resting heartrate. PR 100 BPM - 220 BPM - Acceptable if measured during exercise. Not acceptable if resting heartrate. PR > 220 BPM - Abnormally high heart rate.
The pulse rate is taken to assess the overall heart health and fitness. Normal pulse rates at heart beats per minute for a health adult should be between 60 and 100 beats per minute confirming that forward blood movement is in accordance with the specific health regulations

A pulse oximetry (pulse ox) is a small clothes pin looking piece of equipment, usually placed on the patients finger, used to measure the amount of oxygen in the blood. The pulse ox. is noninvasive, very inexpensive, readilyavailable and it provides instant results. If a pulse ox. reading is low then the caregiver would likely apply oxygen to the patient. If it is a high reading the caregiver would likely remove or decrease the amount of oxygen the patient is on. Because there are factors that can interfere with an accurate reading, there are other ways to test the oxygen levels in the blood.
