The setting is where the story/events take place. Usually a city or country is named near the beginning of the novel. This is the setting. There may be more that one setting in the novel. The time of an event is also considered a setting because it tells the reader when a certain event occured.

The setting in a story means when and where the story takes place. For example, when could mean what time(s), the past, present, or future, what season, what year, etc. Also, where could mean what planet (for a fiction story, perhaps?), what country, what town, whose house, what school, etc. This is what the setting in a story means!
