The associative property of multiplication states that for any three numbers a, b and c,

(a * b) * c = a * (b * c) and so we can write either as a * b * c without ambiguity.

By way of contrast, this is not true for division:

75 / (15/5) = 75 / 3 = 25

but

(75/15) / 3 = 5/3 = 1.66...
