In 1957 the Russian's launched a satellite. This began the "race" and when JFK came to office he set a goal to be the first to land on the moon. Various animals were sent into space by both countries and John Glenn was the first man to go into space around the world. He came down in a small capsule in the ocean where a Navy ship picked him up after his splashdown. Finally in 1969 the United States put the first man on the moon.
