Ancient religions were polytheistic; that is, they had many gods. The built various temples dedicated to the various gods and were named after the gods they were dedicated to. In Greek the word for temple was ho naos (dwelling). In Latin the words for a temple were aedes, templum and sacrarium.

In Greece and in Rome one type of temple was called pantheon and was dedicated to all gods.
