The way the poem is written makes you feel sorry for Narcissus.

The poet uses phrases like 'golden and disgraced' and 'stuck forever'.

This is an effective way to talk about Narcissus because, in the phrase 'golden and disgraced' it shows in three words his transformation, before, when he was golden, and up on a pedestal, and now, as he is, disgraced in front of his family and friends.

The poet, Moniza Alvi has described the place Narcissus is trapped as a land of 'teasing strangeness', 'somewhere between night and day, death and life, ugliness and beauty.' with 'blood-red' sands and 'tiny disappointed ghosts'.

This place is a confusing place, like a world between the worlds. I t reflects how Narcissus is feeling, confused, and despairing.
