We don't "need" it just like your country probably doesn't need whatever symbol you have. We have it though, and for a few reasons. The bald eagle is native to North America and can be found in all states except Hawaii. When the creators of the United States set out to find a symbol (because they wanted one) the bald eagle stood out. They chose it because of its fierce and majestic look and independent demeanor. It is also the second largest bird in America, the largest being the California condor. Interestingly enough, Benjamin Franklin (politician, inventor, scientist) thought that the turkey should be our national bird, because of the bald eagle's tendencies to harass another bird to steal his food. He was outvoted and the bald eagle became a symbol of the USA.
