Best Answer

Long story short, Volcanic explosion. The people in the area surrounding Pompeii had so little knowledge of Volcano's, they didn't even have a word for it at the time. Most of them died almost instantly, having ignored the many signs of an upcoming eruption. In many cases, the corpses can be seen going about their normal activities, forever immortalized in the molds the ash and volcanic rock created.
