In 1792, Etienne Laveaux was a young colonel in the service of the French (First) Republic. On July 23, 1795, the French Convention named Laveaux Governor-General. With further encouragement from Toussaint L'Ouverture, the leader of the Haitian Revolution, Laveaux departed on October 14, 1796 from Saint Domingue to assume his position in the French legislature in Paris, the capital of France.
Haiti does not have a Governor General. Only countries that were British colonies have one, or those that are part of the modern Commonwealth. Haiti was first a Spanish, then a French colony.
