Irene Adler, 'The Woman,' was a character in 'A Scandal in Bohemia,' the only woman to ever outsmart the great detective.
She was very beautiful singer, who had once been in a relationship with the king of Bohemia (or something like that). She had in her posession a photo depicting the two together, which was disturbing now that the king intended to marry another woman. He asked Sherlock to retrieve the photograph.
Irene wasn't fooled by Sherlock's tricks (he even staged a fire alarm) but in the end married someone else and left a message, promising to keep the incriminating photo hidden. She also left behind a photo of herself, which Sherlock kept in his files.
She quickly married Godfrey Norton and travelled to the Continent, and some have speculated that she is the 'Carina' in 'The Adventure of the Retired Colourman.'
Irene Adler was created in 1891.
To Sherlock Holmes, Irene Adler was always *The* Woman. It was not that he was attracted or attached romantically to her but that she was the only woman to outsmart him, the only others being a few men.

Irene Adler
Oh this is a saddd question!! Irene Adler was the only woman ever to escape Sherlock Holmes. Holmes held a much greater and deeper respect for women after that. And he always referred to her as "the woman". You'll hear a lot and I mean a LOT of rumors about some chemistry/romance between the two....but believe me, it is not not not NOTtrue!!! There was never anything between them. Sherlock Holmes was never interested in women and he laughed at romance.
