It is an elective office, so it remains vacant until the next statewide general election.

It's purpose is to assist the State's Governor, and take a Governor's place in case the Governor resigns and or becomes to ill to perform the duties of Governor. In a manner of speaking, the office of Lieutenant Governor closely resembles the role in the Federal Government of the Vice President.

VACANCIES IN OTHER ELECTIVE OFFICES If the Attorney General, Secretary of State, Comptroller or Treasurer fails to qualify or if his office becomes vacant, the Governor shall fill the office by appointment. The appointee shall hold office until the elected officer qualifies or until a successor is elected and qualified as may be provided by law and shall not be subject to removal by the Governor.
