It could mean that you have repressed it for years. You may have done things to try to force yourself to grow into a different mindset and think you have succeeded, only to discover you only built a wall around them.

If you feel this way, there are a handful of things to do to address this. You could just confide in your family or friends and experiment with things that may allow you to have an outlet for the feelings. Or you could see a therapist specializing in gender issues. You might want to go all the way to sex-reassignment surgery and all, or you might simply want to explore with a therapist as to how you developed such feelings in the first place. Perhaps you felt siblings of the other gender were treated better, or maybe you feel your parents emasculated you.

For some people, they may successfully bury the feelings for years. But then something happens to trigger the buried feelings. One person who was disfigured in a motorcycle crash began to understand that life was short and it made the person determined to go for something they wanted their entire life and buried. Sometimes the loss of a spouse or child, a prison sentence, a cancer diagnosis, or other loss can trigger buried feelings of gender confusion.

One thing that is certain is that merely changing living situations won't make it go away. If you were born male and want to be a girl, you won't feel any different after enlisting in the armed forces or getting married. You will only prolong the suffering and perhaps make the pain more complex.

It's normal to question your sexual identity at any age. Take your time exploring your feelings and seek support from friends, family, or a therapist. Remember that your sexual identity is personal and unique to you; there is no rush to label yourself if you're unsure.

Can a gay man lead a normal married life?

A gay person can pretend to lead a straight life, but this will only be repressing his identify and lying to himself. Nothing can change a person's sexual orientation. Even if you undergo "therapies" or treatments, nothing will change about your sexual identity. This has been backed up numerous times by many notable institutions including the American Psychological Association (APA). Even though a gay person may date and have sex with members of the opposite sex, the sexual/romantic attraction for members of the same sex will still be there. This cannot change. It is better to accept your sexual identity and move on. This will make your life more fulfilling and satisfying. Remember that accepting your own sexual identity does not mean you have to tell the whole world.
