Jeff Kinney originally wanted to be a cartoonist, but no newspapers wanted to pick his comics up for syndication. He had the idea for a comic about a kid named Greg Heffley since they year 1998, but it wasn't until 8 years later that he met with a publisher about his idea. Since his comic wasn't gaining the audience Kinney wanted, he ended up teaming up with FunBrain to publish the Diary of a Wimpy Kid online. With the success of the initial website, Kinney ended up publishing the first in the Diary of a Wimpy Kidseries.
