Simply put: Israel fights for the Jewish People to have the right to have a home. Israel represents two major Jewish aspirations. The first is the return to Eretz Yisrael or the Holy Land itself which is a part of many prophecies and revelations. The second is for the Jewish people to actually have a stake in their own protection. In most cases throughout the last 2000 years, Jews have been at the mercy of Emperors, Kings, Presidents, Prime Ministers, and Dictators who at their best were ambivalent about a Jewish presence and at the worst attempted to exterminate them. Israel represents the idea that Jews can control their own fate and decide how they are going to live their lives without the fear of offending some non-Jewish national leader.
As a practical matter, Israel fights for its own security or perceived security against those who attempt to disturb the day to day lives of its citizens.
