Tab colors on Levi's jeans is a branding tool that refers to the type of denim used. In modern Levi's, red tabs are used on conventional denim and silver tabs are used when the denim has "stretch", both for close-fit or relaxed-fit. The original "red tab" was used on 501 jeans starting in the 30's to point out that they were made from a 10-ounce custom denim and were derived from its red selvage (the threads that run off the sides of a bolt of cloth that are woven in an edge strip to keep it from unraveling). In the 70's/80's/90's there was also an orange tab for a lighter weight conventional denim. I've heard people say there was a yellow tab for a while too, but I don't know anything about it.
