Sojourner Truth was born Isabella ("Bell") Baumfree. On June 1, 1843 she changed her name to Sojourner Truth. She told friends: "The Spirit calls me, and I must go" and left to make her way traveling and preaching about the abolition of slavery. She never actually went through the court process to legally change her name so technically her name was still Isabella Baumfree, but she never used that name again after June 1, 1843.
