Depends on which series and what condition it is in. A series 1957 could range from $1.25 to $10. A series 1899 would be $100 or more, possibly much more if in high condition.

1957 silver certificates were saved in large numbers because the series was being discontinued in favor of Federal Reserve Notes. Unfortunately that means your bill is only worth 50 cents to a dollar more than face value.
No federally-issued $20 bill is worth that much. As of 04/2014 the highest auction price is about $35,000 for an 1878 $20 Silver Certificate. Not a trivial amount but also nowhere near a half-million.

Check that bill again. There was no $1 silver certificate dated 1931.
A 1 dollar denomination silver certificate was not made in 1933 only 10 dollar. That being said if you have one it is fake.....its worth $0.00
