Drilling holes into tiles requires the use of either a drill-bit or for larger holes a core or holesaw.

For small holes to cater for rawl plugs for fixures and fittings you will need either a 6mm drill or an 8mm drill. Imperial size is 1/4 inch.

Small spade drills are OK for standard soft ceramic tiles.

For hard porclain tiles you need diamond tipped drills.

Larger holes require the use of a core or holesaw. Standard pipework like water pipes waste, shower heads require hole sizes of 16mm 30mm and 40mm. Imperial sizes is 1inch 1.5 inch and 2inch.

To hole core drills steady you need a drill guide or drill plate. A guide plate will stop the core skidding on wet and slippery tiles.

Manufactuers that make tile drills include:

Armeg

Macrist

Rubi

365Drills

Dewalt

Depending on the number of holes you need to drill will govern how much you spend on tile drills.

A few holes will be about $3 dollars / £5 A whole bathroom about £50 / $70 dollars.

For drilling hotels and major projects then you need bigger and more expensive kit.
