Footprints become fossilized because when a dinosaur makes an imprint in something such as mud and it dries without being disturbed, material builds up on top of it until time and pressure eventually turn the impression into stone where it then will be preserved until it is uncovered or nature intervenes. (earthquake, roots, burrowing animals, etc.)
