It depends on what type of boarding school. If you want to get into the extremely selective schools like Phillips Exeter like I did, you have to basically be perfect in every aspect of your educational life...so a 3.5 is definitely not good enough unless you just happen to be ranked #1 in tennis in the United States or something = ]

An unweighted GPA can only go up to a 4.0, which would be obtained if a student had an "A" in every class.

An unweighted GPA, usually in effect when a student enrolls in an honor or advanced placement (AP) class, can at most go up to a 5.0. This occurs when a student has all honors or AP classes and has an "A" in all of them.

Those would be excellent GPA's. A good, solid GPA would be somewhere around a 3.5. Anything below a 3.5 generally means one is an average student who is taking classes a little above his league or does not wish to give 100% effort. Anything above, as noted earlier, is excellent.
