You may be thinking of the term "ha'penny", which is pronounced like "hay penny". It's slang for an old half-penny coin in British currency. Prior to decimalisation, half-pennies were worth 1/480 of a pound sterling. Following the switch to decimal currency new half-pennies were issued that were worth £0.005, or 1/200 of a pound. The half-penny coin was eliminated in 1984 due to its low purchasing power.

There's no coin called a "hay" penny. The name is pronounced the same but it's actually spelled "ha'penny", a contraction of the term "half penny".

Half pennies were used in Britain for about 1000 years so without a specific date it's impossible to provide any kind of value estimate; please post a new, separate question with that information.

Hey, that's a Wheat cent, not hay.

But anyway, 1958 is one of the most common years for wheat cents. In circulated condition its value is at most 2¢.

I think by "hay penny", you possibly mean Halfpenny. The Halfpenny was one of the lowest denominations of the British currency and they were never struck in gold. Depending on when they were minted, they would have been struck in copper or bronze.

What is a ha-penny?

A colloquial term for a British half-penny, a ha-penny (pronounced "HAY-penny") is an obsolete coin worth 1/480th of a pound. Originally there were two farthings to a half penny, two half pennies to a penny, 12 pennies to a shilling and 20 shillings to the pound. In 1968, however, this system (called the LSD system, after the abbreviations for pound ("£"), shilling ("s") and penny ("d")) was replaced by the decimal system (100 pence to the pound), although a final LSD set of coins was made for collectors in 1970. A decimal half-penny worth 1/200th of a pound was produced for a few years, but is no longer in circulation. The values of half-penny coins vary considerably. For information on a specific coin, please post a new question with its date.
