A symptom is something the patient or subject describes feeling themselves eg: "I feel sick to my stomach and can't sleep". Withdrawal is what occurs when the body has become dependent on an outside source to function correctly, and then that source (in most cases a medication or illicit drug of some sort) is taken away suddenly. This DOES NOT only happen with medication that is abused. For example: When doctors decide that relieving someone's constant pain is more important than than the risk of dependency on a medication, they may place a patient on a potent narcotic, such as Morphine XR, Hydromorphone, or Fentanyl, on a regular basis. They do this even though they know the person may become dependent on the medication. If and when they don't need the medication anymore, the doctor can "take them off" slowly to reduce the amount of withdrawal. Withdrawal symptoms are more commonly found with drug abuse, though, because of the constant high doses required to get and stay high; and then the sudden stops that occur because of lack of availability, money, arrest, etc.

Anxiety is a common withdrawal symptom for many substances, others can be specific to the substance and the length of time one was dependent on it; as does the severity of the symptoms and the length of time one has to deal with them.

Withdrawal, also known as withdrawal/abstinence syndrome, refers to the characteristic signs and symptoms that appear when a drug that causes physical dependence is regularly used for a long time and then suddenly discontinued or decreased in dosage. The term can also, less formally, refer to symptoms that appear after discontinuing a drug or other substance (unable to cause true physical dependence) that one has become psychologically dependent.
