A barcode reader is a machine that interprets barcodes.
A barcode reader is commonly used in retail stores, warehouses, libraries, and hospitals to quickly and accurately scan barcodes on products, inventory, books, or patient wristbands to retrieve information or update records.
A barcode reader scans the barcode with a LASER detecting the alternating light and dark bands and their widths. This pattern is then decoded into a series of digits (or sometimes letters depending on the code). These characters are then sent via a serial interface to the computer in the cash register as a stream of ASCII characters.
Anything that happens after that is up to the software in the cash register's computer and/or the main store computer that the cash register is connected to.
