There are two main classifications of crime:
Felony crime which, by definition is punishable by being sentenced to more than one year in prison, and
Misdemeanor crime which, by definition, is punishable by being sentenced up to a maximum ofone year in jail.
There is also a sub-set of misdemeanor offenses which are not "criminal" offenses per-se, (motor vehicle and traffic regulations, ordnance violations, etc.) which are treated. and can be prosecuted as, violations of the law and ordnances of the state, local jurisdictions and municipalities. Local ordnances are not applicable statewide.
