When you weld steel you need to make sure that oxygen in the air is kept away from the weld while it's being formed. Otherwise the iron in the weld burns in the oxygen and forms a poor weld. Electric welding rods are generally coated with a flux which forms a gaseous shield around the weld point and keeps away the air.

Some welding processes (MIG for example - MIG stands for metal inert gas) do not use a flux coating but have an arrangement where argon or CO2 is passed to the weld point to keep the air away in a different way.

What is the outer coating on a welding rod?

The flux is the outer coating on a welding rod. The flux is a very important part of the welding rod.

Do all electrodes have a coating called flux?

No not all electodes have a flux, in some cases such as certain M.I.G welding the electrode resemble bare wire because it has no flux?

What is the difference in welding rods for ac welders and dc welders?

The difference in the ac/ dc , or polarity of welding rods is in the makeup of the flux coating , or the alloy of the metal, and in the case of SMAW ( Shielded metal arc welding ) rods , which have a flux coating, are usually marked on the base of the rod.

What is five functions of the flux coating on an electrode?

Five uses of the flux coating coating on the electrode are: Producing a protective gas around the weld area Providing fluxing elements and deoxidizers Creating a solid coating over the weld as it cools Establishing electrical characteristics Adding alloying elements. You can find more at your local liberary >> book used Moder Welding, complete coverage of the welding field in one easy to use volume

What is the difference betweenTig wire stick welder?

a stick welder needs to replace his electrode regularly and the flux coating is on the outside while a tig machine constantly feeds the wire and the flux is produced by a filler gas

What is SMAW process?

SMAW stands for Shielded Metal Arc Welding. This process uses electrodes with flux coating, which release gases to surround the weld metal, thereby preventing oxidation.

Difference between flux linkage and flux leakage?

i) leakage flux is those flux which goes through the air and linkage flux is those flux whose go through the cell. ii)leakage flux is the loss at flux but linkage flu is warning flux. iii)leakage flux is cause of eddy current loss and linkage flux is case of copper loss.

E stands for Electrode,70 stands for tensile strength,1 stands for position of welding that is for all positions 8 stands for flux coating.

What is leakage factor?

The Ratio of the total flux ( flux in iron path) to the useful flux (flux in air gap)

Difference between leakage flux and mutual flux?

when a current flow through the coil then flux produced around the coil . if the flux linked same produced coil only then the flux is said to be leakage flux. flux produced by one coil ,but linked with another coil then the flu is said to be mutual flux.

What is welding electroid coating do?

The coating on welding rod is called flux. It acts as a catalyst for the surface of material to be welded is to melt easily as well as acts as cleaning agent to that area so as to generate a firm bonding between the metal to be welded and molten welding rod metal. It also acts as a coating to the welded portion which prevents from atmosphere would result a sudden cooling hence brittle. Rusting of surface also will be protected for a long time if not removed before painting or proper coating.
