Earth's history is divided into apparent major climate changes, usually delineated by mass extinctions. The previous three periods are the paleozoic, mesozoic, and Cenozoic.
The paleozoic is further divided into the Cambrian, vendian, orodovician, silurian, devonian, mississipian, pennsylvanian, and permian. I remember the order with the mnemonic: Campbell's Very Ordinary Soups Do Make People Puke. The mesozoic is divided into the triassic, Jurassic, and cretaceous. The cretaceous ended 65 million years ago.
The most recent division (ours) of the Cenozoic is the holocene. Before that, the pleistocene. Othere cenes are miocene, pliocene, oligocene, and paleocene. These are in no particular order--I need to find a good mnemonic for them.
A million or more years.
