Glycerol is an excellent solvent for a wide variety of chemicals, both organic and inorganic. Glycerol also acts as a moisturizing agent. It can also be heated on a stove-top-type burner and act as a heat transfer fluid for chemistry experiments, esp. distillation, where it provides heat equally at all points of a spherical flask (RBF) when the flask is submerged in the glycerol and heat is applied!

It has many other uses as well.
