An LAL test is a test used to check products for gram-negative bacteria. It is made up of separated and freeze-dried horseshoe crab blood cells. If a liquid is mixed with the test in a vile and then let sit, the thickness of the contents after about half an hour can determine whether the liquid had the nasty bacteria. If the liquid has turned to a milky white jello-like substance, it has the bacteria. If it is still watery, then the product you had tested is sanitary.
Horseshoe crab blood provides modern medicine with a substance, Limulus Amebocyte Lysate (LAL), that is crucial for drug testing. LAL clots in the presence of bacterial endotoxins. Because of this, LAL can be used to test for certain bacterial diseases.
Testing with the Limulus amoebocyte lysate (LAL) assay. The degree of the reaction is measured with a spectrophotometer.
