Loft insulation prevents Conduction and Convection, the floor of the loft is layered with thick wool, this stops heat escaping from your ceiling and stops the cold getting in. :P

Loft insulation works by stopping the upwards movement of heated air, reducing the loss of heat from the rooms below, which of course will then require less heating.
