CONSONANTS are all of the letters of the alphabet EXCEPT a, e, i, o, and u which are called VOWELS. One letter "Y" can be either a consonant or a vowel depending on its sound in a word. If it has a vowel sound, it is counted as a vowel. Examples of Y as a vowel are in the words 'silly' and 'happy' where the "Y" has an "e" sound. "Y" as a consonant would be seen in the words 'yellow' or 'yesterday'.
