A point mutation, or single base substitution, is a type of mutation that causes the replacement of a single base nucleotide with another nucleotide of the genetic material, DNA or RNA. One can categorize point mutations as follows: * transitions: replacement of a purine base with another purine or replacement of a pyrimidine with another pyrimidine * transversions: replacement of a purine with a pyrimidine or vice versa. Transition mutations are about an order of magnitude more common than transversions. Point mutations can also be categorized functionally: * nonsense mutations: code for a stop, which can truncate the protein * missense mutations: code for a different amino acid * silent mutations: code for the same or a different amino acid but without any functional change in the protein For example, sickle-cell disease is caused by a single point mutation (a missense mutation) in the beta-hemoglobin gene that converts a GAG codon into GTG, which encodes the amino acid valine rather than glutamic acid. Point mutations that occur in non-coding sequences are most often without consequences, although there are exceptions. If the mutated base pair is in the promoter sequence of a gene, then the expression of the gene may change. Also, if the mutation occurs in the splicing seat of an intron, then this may interfere with correct splicing of the transcribed pre-mRNA. Sometimes the term point mutation is also used to describe insertions or deletions of a single base pair (which has more of an adverse effect on the synthesized protein due to the nucleotides' still being read in triplets, but in different frames: a mutation called a frameshift mutation).

Point Mutation- a type of gene mutation in which only a single nucleotide in a gene has been changed.

Sorry to burst the persons bubble that said frameshift mutation but its wrong. Point mutation-gene mutation involving changes in one or a few nucleotides. point mutation

Mutations that change one or just a few of nucleotides in a gene on a chromosome are called what?

the correct answer is C. a substitution i know this cause i have this book to this question and point mutation is not one of the answer and i found the answer in the book -No its substituton you jack wagon your books wrong

What are mutations that occur at a single point?

Such mutations are called point mutation or gene mutation.

Can a point mutation result in a frameshift mutation?

Yes, a point mutation can result in a frameshift mutation if it occurs in a coding region of a gene and disrupts the reading frame of the genetic code.

A mutation that involves a single nucletiode is called an?

point mutation

The substitution addition or removal of a single nucleotide in DNA is called a what mutation?

The substitution, addition, or removal of a single nucleotide in DNA is called a point mutation. This type of mutation can result in changes to the amino acid sequence of a protein, leading to potential functional consequences.

Why is point mutation dangerous?

A frame shift mutation destroys the correct sequence of amino acids from the point of the mutation. The protein produced by a frame shift mutation would more than likely be nonfunctional.

What type of mutation is a point mutation?

A point mutation is when 1 base pair is swapped out for another one... so instead of an A you might find a C... or T... or G. Also an insertion or deletion of a base pair A mutation of a single point :)

Will a point mutation cause the cell to make an incomplete polypeptide if the mutation results in a stop codon?

Yes, a point mutation will cause the cell to make an incompelete polypeptide chain that is non-functional, if the mutation results in a stop codon. This type of a mutation is also called as the Nonsense Mutation.

Which is not a frameshift mutation substitution insertion deletion or point mutation?

A point mutation is not a frameshift mutation. Point mutations involve changes in a single nucleotide base, while frameshift mutations involve the insertion or deletion of nucleotide bases, causing a shift in the reading frame of the genetic code.
