Point of View, or POV, is the way a story is written. POV depends on who is telling the story. There are several types of POV

  • First Person - this is a more difficult POV to write, because the author writes everything from the POV of the main character as if the character is speaking to the reader. The author uses pronouns like "I" and "me" to describe the character. When writing First Person, you need to remember that the only information you can put into the story is the information that the character actually knows - this is hard for many authors to do, and sometimes makes the story harder to understand. Robert Parker's Spencer mystery series is done in first person, and is a great example of how to write first person correctly.
  • Second Person - this is almost never seen because it is hard to write and hard to read. The author writes the story using the pronoun "you" to describe the main character.
  • Third Person - this is the most common type of POV. The author uses the character's name or a pronoun like "he" or "she" to describe the character.
Here is the same paragraph written in each POV
  1. I log onto WikiAnswers and scan the new questions. Yep, the usual bunch of folks wanting their homework written for them, and people who didn't read the twenty other versions of the question they just asked. After I spend awhile sorting all that into the right spots, I'm tired of cleaning. I spot an interesting question about how to write different points of view and decide to answer that one.

(Note: I am arbitrarily choosing a gender for this paragraph, as Darksyde is ordinarily a gender-non-specific cyber-being.)
