The Sacrament was first introduced by Christ at what is know as The Last Supper. To partake of it ws to remend ud of the great sacrife that he would make for all mankind. That by His death and resurredtion all namkind may receive the same. It is also a time when we are reverent when we we renew our covenants made with the father, to obey His laws and follow the teachings of Christ.

Roman Catholic AnswerThe Catholic Church was born from the side of Our Blessed Lord as He hung dead on the cross and His side was pierced with a lance. It was then shown to the world fifty days later on Pentecost when the Holy Spirit came upon the Apostles to guide them into all truth. St. Peter was appointed by Our Blessed Lord, Himself, as the head of the Church. He and his successors have ruled as Our Blessed Lord's Vicars ever since. How do Catholics recognize the Real Presence of Christ in the Holy Eucharist outside of Mass?

Once bread has been transformed into the Body of Christ, great reverence is shown to it, the same reverence that is due to God, naturally. The Body of Christ is reserved in the Tabernacle, and a candleburns there 24/7 when He is there. Everybody shows reverence to it by genuflecting upon entering or leaving the Church and anytime that they might pass in front of the Tabernacle. We recognize Our Savior's presence through faith.
