Ordinary portland cement based concrete consists of a mixture of aggregates bound together with portland cement. In the presence of water a chemical reaction takes place and the portland cement is hydolysed. At the end of this chemical reaction the cement becomes hard and binds the aggregate particles together.

Sulphur concrete is composed of a similar mixture of aggregates, however, and this is the big difference, there is no portland cement involved. Instead the aggregate mixture is bound together by molten sulphur at elevated temperatures. Upon placing, the sulphur concrete is allowed to cool and as it cools the molten sulphur becomes a solid again binding the aggregates together imparting rigidity to the concrete mix.

Because sulphur concrete contains no alkaline materials, unlike portland cement mixtures, it is very much more resistant to acid attack and thus finds favour in industry where acid resistant concrete is desirable.
