∙ 13y agoOriginally called the Democratic-Republican Party the Democratic party was founded by Thomas Jefferson and James Madison in the 1790s as a counter to the Federalist Party and promoted States Rights. The issue of James Monroe's sucessor combined with the dissolving of the Federalist Party caused a split forming the Democratic (Andrew Jackson) and Whig Parties. Later the slavery issue cause another split with the anti-slavery Democratics joining with the remnants of the Whig party to form the Republican Party.
Beginning in the 1890s Democratic Party promoted social liberalism in the form of better working conditions and health regulations in the wake of public outrage over situations such as described in Sinclair's "The Jungle". In the 1960s the issue of racial equality was added to the platform and sexual equality added in the 1970s.
