The Illuminati was an organization (1776-1785) of enlightened intellectuals whose goal was the overthrow of the oppressive monarchy controlled by the church in Rome. They were very unsuccessful in their endeavor because that monarch successfully destroyed the organization and imprisoned their leadership.
Since they broke up, the (real) Illuminati group has been fictional. It exists only in the imagination of conspiracy theorists. It is a sort of strawman or scapegoat organization. Anyone the Conspiracy Theorists dislike or envy, they declare, on no evidence of course, that they are in the Illuminati. No substantiated evidence has ever been presented to support the Illuminati theories.
