The capital of Monserrat was Plymouth, until it was destroyed by an erupting volcano. Since 1998, the de facto capital is Brades, with a new town of Little Bay being built to become the new capital. Most of the south of the island is an exclusion zone due to volcanic action.

However, the government has been meeting at Brades Estate in the northwest of the island since the evacuation of Plymouth in 1997, which followed the eruption of the Soufriere Hills volcano that buried the city in ash and pyroclastic rock.
